Today is a good time to be a Cyberpunk 2077 fan. We received tons of new information about the next big title from CD Projekt Red, including an in-depth video about protagonist origin choices, music, and weapons. There is also an interview by Senior Gameplay Designer Pawel Kapala that gives more information about the game’s combat. But that’s not all, as today CD Projekt Red's Senior Level Designer Miles Tost gave an interview to the fan-site NetRunner 2077.
In the interview, they talked about how Cyberpunk 2077 is a much deeper role-playing experience than The Witcher 3. Tost said that 2077 is more about making choices and customization and less about the shooting. Calling it a shooter game isn’t exactly accurate, as Cyberpunk 2077 is first and foremost an RPG before an FPS.
“I don't know, there's a lot, there's a ton of weapons. How I would summarize this is... I think people tend to forget that Cyberpunk 2077 is an RPG first and foremost. Right? So customization and equipment choices, making choices in the skills you have, the talents, how your character looks, how you choose dialogue, it's the center stage of this experience,” Tost said in the video. “I think some people look at this game and think 'Oh man, it's first-person and has guns! It's a shooter!' and that's a very surface-level assessment *chuckles* I think in many ways, it's a much, much deeper role-playing experience than The Witcher 3.”
It will be interesting to see how complex the actual world of Cyberpunk 2077 is. As much as I trust CD Projekt Red, sometimes it feels that they might be promising the impossible. We will know for sure whether the devs can deliver on their promise in the coming months. Cyberpunk 2077 launches (assuming it isn’t delayed again) on November 19 for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. A next-gen port is confirmed and will release at a later date.
