Last month, Naughty Dog shared a 13-minute gameplay trailer of the anticipated Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. The gameplay shows Chloe and Nadine exploring the Western Ghats of India and we get to see one of the biggest explorable environments ever done in the series.
Uncharted fans also love Chloe Frazer and her maverick streak. Reckless, morally lax with a devil-may-care attitude, Chloe is the epitome of professional thief. On the other hand, Nadine is military-trained, operates in a “strictly business” manner and doesn’t have time to joke around.
Past Uncharted games starring Nathan Drake and Sully established an entertaining buddy-adventure tone for the series. However, the dynamic of Chloe and Nadine’s partnership is more situational, and not as ideal.
In Naughty Dog’s latest The Lost Legacy “making of” behind-the-scenes video, Creative Director Shaun Escayg explains Chloe will explore her roots by returning to India for the Tusk of Ganesh, an artifact her father attempted to track, in hopes to learn more about her past. At the same time, Nadine Ross is near bankruptcy after the loss of her Shoreline mercenary business back in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. Nadine needs this opportunity to bounce back and Chloe also needs a partner with military background, not to mention Nadine is someone who is familiar with villain Asav.
However, Chloe and Nadine do have one trait in common – they are both strong and stubborn characters that do not play well with others. The new character dynamic creates a completely new flavor in Uncharted.
“We’re taking advantage of the buddy system by integrating more of the narrative,” Escayg said. “For example, if our characters in the story aren’t communicating well or they’re upset, or they’re aggravated, it will reflect in the gameplay.
“So if I’ve just come out of a heated argument with Nadine Ross, in the gameplay you will feel that tension, you will feel that aggravation.”
Cooperation and interaction between characters in Naughty Dog games have always played an important role in driving the story. It will be interesting to see how Nadine and Chloe’s relationship will evolve as Asav will no doubt challenge them like never before.
