Ever since its show-stealing E3 2019 presentation, CD Projekt Red’s highly anticipated title Cyberpunk 2077 seems to be generating news every week, and this week is definitely no exception.
Aside from giving players the option to be both a pacifist and an anarchist (you have the option to finish the game without killing anyone) or romance options that generated headlines, Cyberpunk 2077 is also reportedly providing three options for the player character’s origin stories.
For example, with the protagonist V, details about their backstory and childhood will dictate your starting location in the game. If you choose to create a custom character, you have three options as well. Cyberpunk 2077’s lead quest designer Pawel Sasko divulged this in an email to VG24/7.
“The player in Cyberpunk 2077 can create a custom character that has one of three origin stories, that we call lifepaths: you can be Nomad, Corpo or Street Kid," Sasko said in the email. "Each of that Lifepaths has a different starting location and story background that are strongly connected with the origin story. Anything more I say can reveal too much from the story, so I will leave it like this.”
This mechanic is similar to tabletop Cyberpunk 2020 and 2013 campaigns. Lifepaths basically dictate a character’s childhood story, their family background, major life events and personal motivations. This is an improvement as it basically brings meaning to the role-playing genre. It is definitely a better alternative than just waking up from a coma and becoming a whatever your quests dictate you to be.
In the screenshot below, it seems that even for V’s customization screenshot, you have the option to set his or her Lifepath.
In other news, quest designer Mateusz Tomaskiewicz also elaborated on the game’s weapon customization options during an interview with GamingBolt. The usual options such as attaching silencers or scopes on your firearms will be available, but it also depends on how many attachments a specific weapon can hold.
