UPDATE: An official trailer has been released for Darksiders 3. The trailer only mentions a release window of 2018, so expect to wait a while for this one.
Darksiders 3 is real, and we know a ton about it already, thanks to a leak on Amazon. The game listing is still available to see for yourself right now, and is screencapped below if the online retailer removes the page.
According to the listing, Darksiders 3 will continue the series’ tradition of players controlling one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The new protagonist this time around is Fury, a mage with a whip and magical powers. It’s up to Fury to restore the balance of good and evil on Earth, and it involves killing a bunch of bad guys.
Interestingly enough, Fury isn’t one of the traditional Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. While the first two games starred War and Death, this means the other two Horsemen left are Conquest and Famine. You’ll notice neither of those are Fury. It’s unclear if this will be resolved in the game, or if developer Gunfire Games simply figured a game starring Fury sounds more interesting than a game starring Famine.
The main villains are incarnations of the Seven Deadly Sins, ranging from grotesque monsters to mystical creatures. Along the way, players will be able to level up Fury and unlock several different forms. Each form will include its own fighting style, weapons and even distinctive ways to navigate a level.
News of a Darksiders 3 isn’t all that surprising. Publisher THQ Nordic was clearly testing the waters with the release of the remastered Darksiders 2: Deathinitive Edition. Not only that, the company had made the original Darksiders a free game in the Games With Gold program last month. These moves were probably done to organically build interest in the franchise again, so there would be more hype when Darksiders 3 is officially revealed.
As for when THQ Nordic will pull the curtain back on Darksiders 3, E3 is right around the corner. The massive gaming convention would be the perfect place for a big reveal, so expect to see a Darksiders 3 trailer coming out in the middle of June.
Darksiders 3 doesn’t have a release date yet, and the Amazon listing only includes a placeholder date of Dec. 31, 2018. A release date announcement could be coming at E3, along with the official reveal, but I bet it isn’t. If Amazon is listing a placeholder in 2018, that means this game likely isn’t releasing this year. If Darksiders 3 is this far from release, it makes sense to hold back a specific release date to avoid having to delay it.
The Amazon listing states the game will release on Xbox One, PS4 and PC, with no mention of the Nintendo Switch. Both of the previous Darksiders games had Wii U releases, so it’s possible Nintendo’s latest console will be getting some love, but this is also a different development team and publisher.
