As part of the Trials of Osiris revamp, Bungie is set to kick off the “Trials Labs.” These are experimental weekends where devs will test certain changes to the pinnacle PvP event, collecting data and feedback in the process. This includes the rewards that you get, the matchmaking system, as well as other quality-of-life improvements.
This week, the developers will replace the regular Trials of Osiris map with the Trials Labs: Capture Zone. The objective here is that 30 seconds after the start of the round, there will be a new zone ripe for the taking. You can finish the game by eliminating the opposing team as usual but capturing the zone does the same.
The team that won the last round will be at a disadvantage as the losing team will spawn at a favorable location in the next match. The capture zone will first spawn in the middle of the map. It will then change locations in succeeding rounds.
Those who will partake in this week’s Trials get double rank points, so if you want to reach the Fabled and Mythic ranks easily, this is the way to do it.
Improving Game Quality and Matchmaking
The developers are looking to improve the quality of Trials of Osiris by making sure that it remains competitive for all people. They said that the sweet spot for Trials participants is a win-loss record between 5 and 2 or 5 and 4. While they didn’t disclose how exactly they will do this, they are looking to make certain changes in the future.
Anyway, in the two weeks since Trials was re-implemented, the devs have found that matchmaking times are under 50 seconds per match on average. The reason why it reached that high is that the system would place those on a 10-round losing streak in a matchmaking pool below the baseline. It turns out that this matchmaking pool is very small compared to the base pool.
The devs intend to make adjustments to the system so no one will get stuck in the smaller matchmaking pool moving forward.
The Iron Banner
Since The Trials Labs: Capture Zone will commence this weekend, the pinnacle PvP event will take a week off and be replaced by the Iron Banner next week. Don’t worry, Trials of Osiris will be back on October 8.
