Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 Open Beta went live last March 1, continued through the weekend, and officially closed on March 4. In that time, Player. One had the opprotunity to spend just over five hours exploring as much of the content as we could, and here are our first impressions.
When you initially boot up The Division 2, you get a cool little intro video. It’s similar to the opening cinematic in the first The Division game, but the styling on this one was especially nice and really helped set the mood. After that, you get to create your own character. During the Open Beta, we couldn’t really explore the customization options apart from randomizing our character over and over. That said, from what we’ve seen, there’s a lot more customization options in The Division 2 than in the first title. We’re seeing more tattoos, accessories, body types, faces, skin tones, hair styles, and more.
The gameplay is a lot like the original The Division, but is smoother and more responsive this time around. Kudos to Ubisoft for doing a seemingly good job on optimizing the game. Graphics are also significantly better, and the environment feels a lot more alive than the original title’s seemingly barren landscape.
Despite only having five hours to see as much of the game as we could, we were happy to know that there are new weapons and gear. There's also a lot of great gameplay features too, such as Projects, Base of Operations Staffing, robust crafting mechanics, a reputation-like system for leveling up ally relations, and more.
There was a surprisingly varied and ample number of objectives to complete during the Open Beta, and we’re more excited than ever to know that Ubisoft’s got even more content lined up for The Division 2’s Year One. Based on their roadmap, which you can see in the video below, there’s a number of plans for The Division 2 going forward, including an 8-player raid activity which will be a first for the franchise.
