Looks like we were wrong and we’re not afraid to admit it. Fan favorite Dota 2 team Among Us appeared to choke going into the finals days of the BTS Pro Series Season 3. They had two chances to get the crown and failed both times.
The tournament champion for the SEA region was none other than Motivate.Trust Gaming. They pretty much underwent what Team Liquid did during The International 2017. For those of you that may have forgotten, Liquid lost their match in the Upper Bracket and worked their way from the Lower Bracket to the Grand Final.
Not So Dominant
Among Us had the momentum going for them after the Group Stage. Things became difficult after they managed a win against Motivate.Trust. In the Upper Bracket Finals, they faced off against BOOM Esports. Among Us had swept BOOM 2-0 in the Group Stage.
However, when the first game started in their second match, it was BOOM that had a strong start. While Among Us managed to swing the pendulum to their favor, BOOM had none of it and eventually grabbed the win. The second game was pretty much clear as BOOM took the lead and never looked back.
Climbing to the Grand Final
For Motivate.Trust, they lost 1-2 versus Among Us in the Upper Bracket. That didn’t seem to bother them as they pretty much dominated the next two matches by sweeping Neon Esports and NEW Esports both with a 2-0 score.
This led to a rematch against Among Us. In the first game, Among Us took the victory in a rather quick game, ending just barely under 30 minutes. Motivate.Trust didn't take this sitting down and quickly went to work on the second game to get the win. The deciding match was really interesting as it took a rather long time, but Motivate.Trust grabbed the victory and moved to the Grand Final versus BOOM.
For those expecting a long series, they were probably disappointed as it was all Motivate.Trust. That’s right, the team managed to sweep BOOM 3-0 in the Grand Final and get their first win in a Tier 2 event.
Now What?
With the tournament over, the SEA region is probably going to see some interesting changes. Fnatic and TNC didn’t perform as expected and the former in particular could be looking at new roster changes.
Despite the loss, BOOM continues to show that they indeed are one of the strongest in the region. It will also be interesting to see how Motivate.Trust is going to perform at future tournaments.
Meanwhile, Among Us is going to disband, with Neungnara “23savage” Teeramahanon and Abed Azel “Abed” Yusop going back to their respective teams. Carlo “Kuku” Palad, Anucha “Jabz” Jirawong, and Matthew “Whitemon” Filemon, still have no teams so it’s going to be just as interesting to see who picks them up.
One Division Left
With that, only the EU/CIS division remains for the BTS Pro Series S3. The division is still in the middle of its playoff matches. So far, it’s Ninjas in Pyjamas that have managed to get the first slot in the Upper Bracket Final.
What do you think? Is the EU/CIS going to see upsets like SEA? Are you sad to see Among Us get so close, but fail to win? Let us know in the comments section below.
