The classic action role-playing game Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles will soon be receiving a remastered edition. As announced by Square Enix, the game will be launched worldwide on the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and iOS on January 23 next year.
For those who are unfamiliar with the 2003 title, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles takes place in an unnamed fantasy world inhabited by four unique races. The player assumes control of a caravan hailing from the village of Tipa, in which members of the world’s four races come together to cooperate. Set a thousand years after a giant meteorite fell on the land and blanketed the world with a deadly miasma, the group’s task is to embark on a journey to seek drops of myrrh that purify special crystals. These crystals keep the ancient miasma in check, and help protect their home.
The gameplay for Crystal Chronicles follows typical role-playing game elements, with options for single and multiplayer modes. Players choose from the four different races, each with their own unique abilities and powers. Items for combat efficiency can be acquired by gathering blueprints and materials and crafting them. These items can also be bought in the world’s shops or be given as a gift from the character’s family. As for combat, the use of combinations is essential. This includes chaining special attacks and spells to create new effects and debuffs in battle.
Initially released for the GameCube in Japan in 2003, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles has since received both critical and commercial success and eventually spawned a Crystal Chronicles series for Nintendo consoles.
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered Edition contains brand new features such as online multiplayer for up to four players, cross play between different platforms, and transferable save data across platforms. New post-game dungeons, new variant character skins for each race, added items, and an all new narration and voice over work are also included in the remastered game.
In Japan, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered Edition will be available both physically and digitally for the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. As for its iOS and Android versions, these will be playable for free, but certain content will be inaccessible until a purchase for the full game is made.
