Like “The Runaway Dinosaur” in The Flash Season 2, Kevin Smith has done it again and directed one of the best episodes thus far in The Flash Season 3, “Killer Frost.” Caitlin Snow, still trying to cope with the evil temptations associated with her new powers, kidnaps Julian Albert during a quest to find Alchemy, who she believed could rid her of her newfound abilities.
During Killer Frost’s rampage, she tackles The Flash to the ground and gives him a frosty kiss that freezes his entire body blue. This trademark cold kiss comes straight from the comics. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Smith explained how he brought that moment to life.
"She gives [Barry] the fucking cold kiss!” he said. "That they have done a zillion times, probably, in the comics with Killer Frost and it's one of the first time I think it gets done [on screen]. I was so happy that it was in my episode!" Smith said.
Smith said the scene was also inspired by Batman and Catwoman.
"For one brief moment, not only were we making an old issue of Flash, but we had this real Batman Returns kind of positioning where she's kind of straddling on top of him like Catwoman was when she was kissing Batman on the roof with the mistletoe,” Smith said. "So we're homage-ing shit left and right while doing one of the most classic Killer Frost moves in the comics: the cold kiss."
Killer Frost’s arc drove the episode, but there were also some other iconic moments. The opening scene where Savitar dragged Barry though the speed force was possibly one of the best sequences in Flash history. Smith also included an funny easter egg from Frozen.
At the frozen food plant where Killer Frost brings Julian, there’s a t ruck with the company name "Ledded Goh" on the side. Ledded Goh as in "Let It Go," the iconic song from Frozen . If you haven’t seen the movie, here’s a clip that will make the meaning of the joke clear.
The next episode of The Flash is the second night of the four-episode “Invasion! crossover next week. Check out the new crossover trailer here.
