For the second time in a year, developer Luminous Productions and publisher Square Enix have delayed the action RPG Forspoken again. The new release date is moved from October 11, 2022, to January 24, 2023, a decision “as a result of ongoing discussions with key partners.” Check out the full announcement on Twitter below.
Those who have closely followed the game’s development will remember Forspoken’s first delay that was announced in March, pushing back the game from its May 24 release to October 11. The reason given for that delay was:
… getting it right is extremely important to us. To that end, during the next few months we will focus all of our efforts on polishing the game and can’t wait for you to experience Frey’s journey this fall.
Square Enix’s wording for this new delay is also worth looking into. These “discussions with key partners” may very well be referring to the official reveal of God of War Ragnarok’s release date yesterday, which places the highly anticipated PlayStation exclusive on November 9, 2022. The general consensus is that Sony does not want two big releases within what basically amounts to a month, an understandable move given how big God of War Ragnarok is for PlayStation 5.
In any case, the Japanese publisher seems desperate for a win when it comes to new intellectual properties, as their last offering with developer PlatinumGames, Babylon’s Fall, fell absolutely flat on its back.
Forspoken tells the story of Frey, a young woman transported from New York City to the fantasy world of Athia. Here, she must use her magical powers to journey through it and survive to find her way back home. Her powers are granted to her by a magical, sentient bracelet she calls “Cuff,” and together, they must traverse Athia, taking on all manner of twisted monsters along the way. Forspoken will be released on PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and Microsoft Store.
