Filming on the Han Solo movie, directed by Chris Miller and Phil Lord (The Lego Movie), has begun and Miller has posted the first image from the set to Twitter. There’s not a whole lot to glean from this first image, unless you’re interested in the lens and resolution. It’s a photo of the slate for roll A001, Take 1: the very first shot. Or, as Miller describes it, “Han First Shot.” Yes, it’s very nearly the official position of Disney at this point that Han shot first.
The Han Solo movie’s code name, Red Cup (because of Solo, get it?), is featured prominently on the slate. While the name doesn’t indicate anything about the plot, the font has a bit more to say. Doesn’t it look like a Western font? Like the same type of title treatment as The Hateful Eight. We’ve written about the Western aesthetic planned for Han Solo before, which takes particular inspiration from the paintings of Frederic Remington.
The Han Solo movie will be out in 2018, after this year’s Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi.
