We’re still six days removed from the launch of Horizon Zero Dawn , an incredibly immersive open-world game set hundreds of years after the fall of mankind, but select Sony and Guerrilla Games employees can’t seem to help discussing a potential Horizon Zero Dawn sequel.
Last week, Sony Interactive Entertainment UK’s Product Manager Jon Edwards told Videogamer the company sees “a lot of potential” for Horizon Zero Dawn to become the company’s next big franchise. Edwards stopped short of committing to a Horizon sequel, but the product manager does suggest Sony is looking farther down the road than the Horizon Zero Dawn debut. And now the site managed to get similar statements from an employee of Guerrilla Games.
According to a new report, also from Videogamer, Guerrilla Games hasn’t yet made a decision about what it will begin working on after Horizon Zero Dawn hits PS4 later this month. Producer Samrat Sharma says the studio’s decision makers will meet in the near future to determine what comes next for the studio. Plenty of people involved with the game, including Guerrilla, have suggested this is the first entry in franchise that will continue alongside other Sony IP, like God of War or Uncharted. But Sharma told Videogamer that the HZD devs “haven't yet thought that much into the future.” But it's hard to imagine Guerrilla moving on from Horizon if the game meets its 8 million unit sales projection.
There will be plenty of people demanding the studio break ground on a new Horizon game but it’s probably safe to assume Guerrilla will weigh all of its options before starting work on its next project. Obviously, any theoretical Horizon sequel is still years away from release and there’s a good chance we won’t see anything official about a potential successor until 2018 or 2019 (at the earliest). But it’s still encouraging to see ranking members of both organizations discussing the future of Horizon Zero Dawn before the game is even available for purchase.
Horizon Zero Dawn is in development for PlayStation 4. The game debuts Feb. 28, 2017.
