An anonymous source told Devin Faraci, of Birth. Movies. Death., that the Thor: Ragnarok script “was the darkest thing Marvel had ever put to paper.” Since that reveal, Marvel Studios hired Taika Waititi, a director best known for offbeat comedies like What We Do In the Shadows and Flight of the Conchords. So how will Waititi’s comedy sensibilities transform Thor: Ragnarok?
Waititi elaborates on his plans for Thor on Twitter and in an extensive interview with Collider.
Bringing The Lolz To 'Thor: Ragnarok'
“I love that one moment in Avengers when Hulk grabs Loki and rag dolls him. It lends itself to great humor, do you read those comic books? They’re wacky. They’re crazy. I think that‘s exactly what they need, to keep changing it up. They’ve got their dark films, some are more serious, and I think it’s great that they’re mixing it up. I really want to inject my style of humor into this,” Waititi said to Collider.
Thor: Ragnarok, despite reports of its darkness, has a lighthearted premise. Mark Ruffalo described Thor: Ragnarok to the Daily News as “a buddy picture with Thor and Bruce Banner.”
Though Waititi is not a credited writer on Thor: Ragnarok—suggesting that a great deal of the original, scripted darkness will remain in the plot — Waititi praised Marvel’s flexibility when it came to telling the best possible story.
“They are constantly looking for the best story, they’ll tear everything down to rebuild it to make sure they have the best story,” Waititi said. “That’s why Marvel is good they keep pushing and pushing and trying to get the best thing possible. That’s what I’ve discovered the way things have changed.”
Describing his involvement with the screenplay for Thor: Ragnarok, Waititi said, “I think the most use I’ll be in terms of humor. Trying to find funnier ways of doing stuff. That’ll be my strength. They’ve got structure and stuff but I’ll be useful at putting jokes in there.”
With Thor: Ragnarok sending Thor and The Hulk on what Ruffalo described to Empire as “a universal road movie,” a comedic touch could definitely buoy Marvel’s upcoming Thor threequel.
Thor: Ragnarok will be out in theaters July 28, 2017.
