With every Injustice 2 character reveal, the question about how large the initial roster will be when the game ships in May comes up. Now, some new evidence may have confirmed the exact number.
The first piece of evidence comes from the official Injustice 2 website. If you go to the character page, the layout shows all of the announced characters with a bunch of blank slots. The number of slots of announced and unannounced characters is 38, with 24 already announced.
So are there 38 characters coming to Injustice 2 at launch? Probably not. It’s already confirmed there will be DLC post-launch, so 38 is closer to the final roster size.
For the roster size shipping in May, you’ll have to refer to some comments Ed Boon made during a livestream of Injustice 2, which you can see around the 1:25 mark in the video below. In that clip, Boon says that they will probably have 28 characters with DLC coming after launch.

If there are 28 initial characters in the Injustice 2 roster, then that leaves 10 DLC characters coming post-launch. Darkseid has been confirmed a pre-order bonus and is not featured in the Injustice 2 website roster so he counts as one. This leaves nine more characters coming to Injustice 2 after the game has launched.
A new character for Injustice 2 will be announced on March 23, according to the official site, so the roster will start to fill out as we get closer to the release date.
Injustice 2 will release May 16.
