There’s a ton of cool features found in iOS 10 that Apple didn’t announce at WWDC and while excitement for iOS 10 has continued to grow since the public beta release, there are still a couple gripes with iOS 10.

One of the main gripes concerns the gradual push to make things bigger in Apple design. Choosing between a Normal vs. Zoomed-In/Magnified look is already part of the startup process for any new iOS 9 install and is carried over to iOS 10.

In fact, iOS 10 uses a larger font than iOS 9 and, coupled with the new character spacing (kerning!) rules, the effect comes across as overtly large. To be fair to Apple, consumers have been pushing for bigger screens, meaning more information can be be displayed at once. This isn’t necessarily good design-wise, however. Sometimes less really is more.

The less-is-more, big-is-better design philosophy can be best seen with in iOS 10 with the revamped Apple Music and Apple News apps, as well as the new approach to notifications.

The reason the text is so big with Apple Music is because they’re actually touch targets/buttons, even though it may not come across immediately. Notifications are also intended to be interactive as well, with integrated 3D Touch support. Apple News is trying to shift its philosophy from seeming like an aggregator, to coming across as a proper news source (even though it will still be aggregation based.

What are your thoughts about the iOS 10 design? Is everything too big? Share your thoughts in the comment section below, but don’t forget that you’ll be getting old one day too.
