The 4.7-inch iPhone 7 may have less RAM than the 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus, if reports floating on the Chinese micro-blogging site Weibo, via India-based tech blog Mobipicker, turn out to be correct.
Reports claim the iPhone 7 Plus will have its RAM upgraded to 3GB, but the standard iPhone 7 will keep its 2GB RAM (for reference, the Samsung Galaxy S7 has 4GB RAM). This would be important, as it’s the first internal feature difference between the two sized models other than a camera stabilization module included only on the 6 Plus and 6s Plus.
This would fit in nicely with another, more established rumor that stated Apple is considering implementing a dual rear-facing camera system on the iPhone 7 Plus, but not the iPhone 7, with the idea being to stratify their product line, pushing their highest end iPhone even further upwards in terms of hierarchy.
While Weibo has been a source for Apple leaks in the past, it’s better to take these rumors with a grain of salt for the same reason random Twitter accounts can be difficult to verify. However, where there’s smoke, there’s typically fire, and according to Mobipicker, various posts on Weibo are supporting the rumors.
The two other tidbits Mobipicker uncovered are that Apple is planning on keeping the 16GB storage base for the iPhone 7, but bumping the base iPhone 7 Plus to 32GB of storage. Finally, possible integration with USB Type-C technology has been rumored as well. The 12-inch MacBook has only one cable port, for example, and it’s for USB Type-C, so it’s not entirely out of the question.
