Publisher Private Division has just regrettably announced that the long-awaited sequel for its hit space simulator Kerbal Space Program will be delayed to 2021. Originally planned for a Spring 2020 release, Kerbal Space Program 2 is now set to release in the Fall of 2021.
The news regarding the delay was announced in a tweet from the game’s official Twitter account. The message cited its ambitious plans to create the best possible sequel to KSP. Kerbal Space Program 2 has already been confirmed to contain multiplayer modes and the ability to colonize planets and other celestial bodies – a huge technological improvement over its predecessor. However, due to the global pandemic caused by COVID-19, the company has faced “many unique challenges that require more time to safely iterate, create, test, and make Kerbal Space Program 2 as as great as it can be. We understand this isn’t the news you were hoping to see, but ultimately we need to make the best decision for the development of Kerbal Space Program 2.”
This has been the second delay that the space sim sequel has experienced. When it was first announced during Gamescom in 2019, it had a March 2020 release date. This delay is understandable though, and the developer should prioritize its employees’ safety, especially in these trying times.
To close off the message, the Kerbal Space Program 2 dev team has confirmed that they will still be keeping up with regular updates that consist of feature videos, developer blogs, and other content to share their progress on the highly anticipated sequel.
For those who still cannot wait for KSP 2 to come out and have an outerspace-exploring itch that needs scratching, Kerbal Space Program is still loads of fun to play. Just recently, they announced the release of a free content update in cooperation with the European Space Agency. Titled “Shared Horizons”, the additional content will provide real life blueprints of ESA missions for Kerbonauts to imitate. The planned update will be available on July 1.
Kerbal Space Program 2 is slated to release for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in Fall 2021.
