King of Fighters 14 Ultimate Edition is arriving on PlayStation 4. With this edition, players can get access to a maximum roster of 58 characters. This version is priced at $39.99 and will arrive in the North American market on January 20.
The King of Fighters series had its start all the way back with the release of the first game in 1994. While the original title was concerned to rival Street Fighter, it was praised for coming up with its own features.
In particular, the game made good use of team battles. Instead of a fight consisting of three rounds, the matches implemented what was known as the Team Battle System. Players get to choose teams having three fighters each, rather than using a single character. The match ends when all three members of either team have been eliminated.
That’s not all as KOF also allowed players to call other teammates on the sidelines to perform a support attack.
In terms of the story, it focuses on Rugal Bernstein who hosts a fighting tournament to kill his adversaries and turn them into stone statues. Trying to stop him is the trio of Terry Bogard, Ryo Sakazaki, and Kyo Kusanagi.
Since then, there have been several titles released as part of the franchise. The latest KOF 14 was released in 2016, a good six years since the last game was published. This game also continued the use of the Team Battle System and improved the 3D graphics. The game introduced the “Rush Combo” as well. It's an automatic combo system to make the game more accessible to new players.
By KOF 14, a lot has happened and introduced many characters from other dimensions and universes. The game has received positive reviews with many critics saying that it may be the greatest title in the series.
