A setting in The Last of Us Part 2 may have been discovered, thanks to an analysis of concept art released by developer Naughty Dog. This information has been compiled on the Games subreddit by user falconbox.
While The Last of Us Part 2 may be set in multiple locations like the first game, it seems part of the story takes place in Seattle. Some of the biggest clues falconbox and other redditors found include common Seattle sights like parking sign design and vegetation, as well as specific buildings and locations.
Perhaps the most obvious references to Seattle are the buildings found in concept art that can also be seen on Google Maps. In the picture above, falconbox has compared official concept art with a picture of a real parking garage found on 1st Avenue. The similarities are striking, including an almost identical sign over the garage as well as the vertical beams on the front being the same both in the photo and the artwork.
Another real-life example given is in the background of the above artwork. The building with the word “Driftwood” on it looks eerily similar to a building located on the corner of South Washington and 1st Avenue in Seattle. This also means this building is a few real-world blocks away from the parking garage above.
Seeing as how the original The Last of Us featured real-world locations like Boston, Pittsburgh and Salt Lake City, it only makes sense that the sequel would as well. The first game also ended in Wyoming, so it seems more plausible that Ellie and Joel would have travelled further West instead of heading back East towards Boston.
It should be noted this doesn’t necessarily guarantee a Seattle setting. While these pictures make it look like Naughty Dog is obviously using Seattle as a reference, it’s possible it may only be a reference. Movies are set in different locations from where they are actually shot all the time, like how The Avengers’ New York City was actually Cleveland. These concept pieces may be using the feel from these Seattle locations to bring some other city to life.
So what do you think? Do you think these concept shots are pointing towards a Seattle setting? Do you think there will be multiple locations to travel to like in the first game? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
