The Flash isn’t the only Arrowverse show with relationship drama. Legends of Tomorrow Season 3 episode 2, “Freakshow,” began with Nate and Amaya’s breakup, but the dramatic situation sparked a story arc about Vixen in past and future generations.
Celebrating Nate’s birthday at his apartment in 2017, Amaya (The oldest Arrowverse version of Vixen) sees a news report about her granddaughter Mari (the original and youngest Arrowverse version of Vixen, who has the CW Seed animated series) fighting crime in Detroit. When Nate goes on a donut run, she leaves him without saying goodbye. She first goes to find Mari, who she watches save five people in one night. Then, to ensure Mari’s heroic future stays intact, she goes back to the 1940s (where the Legends found her with the Justice Society).
Flash forward six months from the breakup and White Canary needs Amaya for a mission. The Legends find her guarding her village of Zambezi, but don’t tell Nate she’s coming back. Nate is not happy to see her, and spends the whole day drunk trying to deal with the pain. But there’s bigger problems to worry about. Amaya is losing control of her powers, which leads to erratic, deadly outbursts. We find out they have been happening for a month. Just a few weeks earlier she killed an entire army, which is not in her character.
There’s a couple reasons this could be happening to Amaya. Amaya could be pregnant, and her powers are growing fiercer and stronger to protect her kin. There’s not exactly evidence to back this theory, but the idea of Amaya having a child would certainly make sense. Amaya needs to have a child at some point in order for her granddaughter Mari (we’ll get to Kuasa later) to be born. More likely is the possibility that Amaya’s new issues are related to the appearance of another ancestor, Kuasa.
"I think it’s really fascinating for Amaya to see that one of her descendants could turn out to be evil,” Maisie Richardson-Sellers revealed to Bleeding Cool. "She knows she has to get back to her timeline because [present-day Vixen] Mari needs to exist, but now she knows that if Mari exists so does Kuasa. It really shakes her up for the season."
Kuasa is the sister of Mari’s Vixen, making her Amaya’s granddaughter as well. If the name sounds familiar, it’s because you may have already met Kuasa on Vixen’s animated series where she’s first introduced as a villain. Kausa guarded the Anansi Totem (which gives Vixen powers) before Mari escaped to America with her mother. Decades after, Kuasa hunted down Vixen because she wanted the totem for herself.
Kuasa came back in Vixen Season 2 in a less evil capacity. She first helped Mari find the Water totem, but by the end she tried to steal the totem for herself. Black Canary and The Atom captured her, and the three heroes convinced Kuasa to join their fight. Kuasa did, but ended up dying in the process. In the latest episode of Legends, a mysterious woman in a robe (possibly the Time Trapper?) used some sort of mystical prowess to bring Kuasa back from the dead.
While Kuasa may first appear is a villain working with this being, Ray will not forget her moment of sacrifice, according to Executive Producer Marc Guggenheim.
“Ray, at the appropriate moment, will accurately tell her that there were moments where Kuasa was capable of selfless good,” Guggenheim told Entertainment Weekly back in August. “So I think that gives Amaya a little bit of hope."
How will Amaya deal with the presence of her granddaughter, Kuasa? Will all Amaya’s time-travel (as well as the imminent threat of The Time Trapper, who can manipulate every aspect of time) affect the birth of Mari’s mother and Vixen’s destiny in Detroit?
