Publisher Nacon and developer Daedalic Entertainment finally revealed the first gameplay footage for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum via a reveal trailer, as well as announcing the launch date for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, and PC via Steam on September 1. A Nintendo Switch release is also announced, with this particular version arriving sometime later this year. Check out the gameplay trailer below to see The Lord of the Rings: Gollum in action for the first time.
Going by the gameplay reveal, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum seems like a stealth-oriented adventure game, taking place in the Middle-earth universe as envisioned by legendary writer J.R.R Tolkien. The game at this stage looks a bit rough around the edges, with stutters in some parts and blurry textures, but it does look on par with what you’d expect from a video game centered on Gollum: dark and grimy. That said, there are parts in the footage that sees Gollum visiting areas with color and light, which could make for a good break against all of that gloomy backdrop as he traverses the orcs’ bases.
However, one key thing worth noting that fans of The Lord of the Rings series of films will almost immediately notice is the voice acting. The gameplay footage has Gollum narrating over it, and it’s painfully obvious that they did not manage to get Andy Serkis, who played Gollum in the movies, for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum. This aspect is purely dependent on whether your love for the franchise stems from Peter Jackson’s trilogy of films; if you do, you may find the voice acting to be a bit off, as Andy Serkis basically defined that role in his appearances.
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is now up for wishlisting on Steam, where you can check it out for yourself. According to the page, the game will feature various ways of traveling, using Gollum’s innate agility and cunning to sometimes dispose of his enemies in creative ways. It will also feature Gollum’s suppressed alter ego, Smeagol, and feature decisions that will have you listen to one or the other.
