Magic: Legends announced that its Open Beta is launching on the Epic Games Store. This free-to-play game pays tribute to the Magic: The Gathering collectible card game. The open beta is on March 23 with the official launch for PC and consoles scheduled sometime this year.
Those who are interested to join the open beta can download the game once it goes live. Players who access the game through Epic Games get the free Epic Planeswalker Starter Pack. It offers the Moorland Ranger Costume and the Moorland Ranger Werewolf Summon Skin. The starter pack also comes with two drop boosts that increase the drop rate of rewards for 30 minutes. This pack is available from the day the open beta starts until April 6.
Planeswalker Bundle
While the open beta is still next month, Magic: Legends has already released a Planeswalker Bundle which offers some interesting cosmetic content and exclusive items. The bundle is available at $39.99 and you can read more about it here.
Placement in the Lore
For those not familiar, Magic: The Gathering was released in 1993 and had lore that covered what’s clearly an expansive multiverse. The stories mainly focused on Planeswalkers and their travels to different planes, each having its own history, culture, and inhabitants. Magic: Legends , in a way, follows that theme with players taking on the role of Planeswalkers.
In terms of storyline, Magic: Legends is set after the Great Mending of Dominaria and just before the Hour of Devastation on Amonkhet. Long-time fans and players of the game should be familiar with those events in the card game. New players though may have to settle with just the story offered by the digital game.
That also means players can experience these planes:
- Dominaria
- While no longer the nexus of the multiverse, it remains to be the largest and most varied planes.
- Zendikar
- This plane offers some excellent adventures for Planeswalkers while also bringing untold dangers.
- Innistrad
- This plane is all about dark intrigue and gothic horror.
If you’re interested, you can sign up for the open beta here. While the open beta is limited to PC users, the official game will also launch for PS4 and Xbox One.
