The first trailer teaser for the rebooted The Mummy includes a nod to the shared universe Universal hopes to build based on its its famous monsters. In addition to Tom Cruise as mummy hunter Nick Morton and Sofia Boutella as the titular mummy, this first trailer tease also includes a shot of Russell Crowe as Dr. Henry Jekyll. Throw him into the stew with Luke Evans’ Dracula from Dracula Untold and soon enough we’ll all have that League of Extraordinary Gentlemen sequel for which the world has been clamoring.
Shared universe silliness aside, this first trailer tease (the full trailer for The Mummy drops Sunday) has lots of Tom Cruise, including Tom Cruise running. So you know this is a Tom Cruise movie. As for Boutella’s Mummy… we’ll see. She’s got a freaky sarcophagus and a whole bunch of vague sand and eye magic happening. Hopefully she’ll do more than hiss with menace.
Watch for yourself:
We’ll see if the full trailer says different, but so far The Mummy looks like the very definition of a generic summer blockbuster. Despite director Alex Kurtzman’s insistence that “it is our life goal to make a horror movie,” The Mummy is clearly not that. Still, it will be an interesting test case for the expansive Universal monsters shared universe barrelling our way.
The Mummy will be out June 9, 2017.
Can I stop typing the word ‘tease’ over and over now?
