Nintendo recently announced its next console, tentatively called the Nintendo NX , would release in 2017 after reports had the console coming out by the holiday season of 2016. Now a new report claims the delay in release was because of VR.
That’s right, according to DigiTimes and a source close to the supply chain of Nintendo’s console, “Nintendo wished to enhance the game console's video-game/handheld-game-integrated gaming experience and add virtual reality (VR) function into the system to gain advantages in the upcoming video game and mobile game competitions.”
Foxconn Electronics, which will be assembling the Nintendo NX, declined to comment on the matter.
These sources also pointed out the NX will combine traditional video games and mobile gaming, a rumor that included backwards compatibility. The device will feature a five- to seven-inch display, controller and joystick for users to play as a mobile gaming product.
It will also connect to a television for users to play as a traditional video game console.
The increased production orders of certain parts for the NX have led to plenty of rumors, like increased ROM production leading many to believe that Nintendo was bringing back a cartridge-based system .
Nintendo’s reported foray into VR makes sense considering Sony and Microsoft already have some sort of foothold in the market, with Sony having the PlayStation VR headset and Microsoft working closely with Oculus.
