The Nintendo Switch is launching in March, but truth be told, Nintendo has yet to reveal all. We’ve gotten a pretty good look at the Nintendo Switch hardware, which is uniquely innovative but not very powerful compared to other consoles. We’ll even get a hands-on opportunity with the hardware before the system comes out. But there’s one thing we haven’t really seen yet: The games. And that’s probably not going to change until the New Year, when the big Nintendo Direct airs on January 12.

The Nintendo Switch is, believe it or not, expected to have a relatively strong launch lineup. There’s a reason the Wii U’s release calendar has been so weak for the last two years: Nintendo has been devoting its developments dollars to the Switch and we know about several major first-party games that are in development for the system. But we don’t know which ones will come out right away and which ones will be years down the line.

So far, Nintendo has focused almost all of its Nintendo Switch efforts on Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It’s clearly the primary showcase for the system, as it should be: Zelda games are the height of what Nintendo has to offer as a single-player experience. We’ve seen glimpses of other titles too, from the new Mario game to third-party titles like Skyrim, but all this is just gleaned from trailers and other early videos of the Switch. We haven’t had any dedicated demos or Nintendo Direct videos about anything besides Zelda.

Sooner or later, that will change and Nintendo will unveil the true depth of what the Nintendo Switch has to offer. That will certainly include the new Mario game and hopefully some unexpected third-party titles or first-party games like the rumored Splatoon 2. Other first-party offerings like the new Pokémon game and what’s probably a Metroid game may also make an appearance, even if they won’t be out for the launch. After all, a new console debut is one of the few times it makes sense to advertise titles that won’t be out for years: It can help convince people to buy the system in the first place.

Alas, none of this will happen until after the holidays. Nintendo had a very weak holiday slate on the console side this year, since the Wii U is on its way out, but Pokémon Sun and Moon is a tremendous hit and Nintendo won’t detract from that by marketing exciting new games that, for now, are still on the horizon. But fear not: the company will unveil the Nintendo Switch lineup in just another month or so, probably during the Switch presentation on January 12. We just have to hope that it will truly be up to snuff.
