Apex Legends has been out for about a month and half, and it looks like the battle royale game is only getting started. Following its massive post-launch success, Apex Legends has just opened its first season, bringing with it new content, a full-fledged Battle Pass, and the newest edition to the Apex character roster: Octane.
Octane is all about speed and adrenaline, featuring an offense- and mobility-oriented kit designed for more aggressive play styles. Similar to the other offense heroes – Bangalore, Wraith, and Mirage – Octane's skills focus on quick distance closing, speedy repositioning, and flanking enemy positions. Octane’s a front-line fighter with a high-risk, high-reward play style. His active ability allows him to spend health to boost his movement speed by 30% for six seconds. While the health cost is considerable, Octane’s passive ability lets him regenerate some health over time, challenging players to balance speed with survivability. Octane does feature some interesting new mechanics, but with a play style that gambles health for offensive ability, performance will still be decided by player skill and experience.
Despite the new mechanics introduced by Octane’s kit, it’s his ultimate ability that has the most game-changing potential. Once charged, Octane can drop a launch pad onto the field, allowing players to gain massive airtime and either drop-in on enemy positions or retreat and reposition. Octane adds an entirely new vertical threat to the game, so players need to watch out for the skies as much as the horizon as long as Octane is in play.
There were a lot of rumors and plenty of speculation flying around over the past month regarding what was in store for Apex Legends, especially regarding the upcoming new character. While all signs were indeed pointing to the fact that it was Octane readying his debut, we can all rest easy knowing that it’s been officially confirmed.
You can get Octane for free when you get the Season One Battle Pass, or you can purchase him directly from the store for 12,000 Legend Tokens or 750 Apex Coins.
