Increases in RAM capacities appear to be one of the latest coveted features for smartphones, and the recently launched OnePlus 3 hosts a whopping 6GB of RAM. OnePlus announced its third “Flagship Killer” device Tuesday and enthusiasts have already begun testing the smartphone against competitors.
A speed test shared by YouTube channel C4ETech shows that despite having a massive RAM capacity, the OnePlus 3 has some limitations. The speed test compared the OnePlus 3 to the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, which features 4GB of RAM, and Samsung’s flagship proved itself as the superior device in handling short-term processing.
In an initial run, the tester showed how the two devices fared opening and loading a number of apps including Temple Run , Shareit, Skype, Gmail, Twitter and YouTube. The Galaxy S7 Edge completes all of its tests in one minute, two seconds, while the OnePlus 3 already begins to lag at one minute, 11 seconds.
Next, the devices are tested for memory management, or opening and loading the same apps and games by pulling them from background processing. The Galaxy S7 Edge completes its takes in one minute, 35 seconds, while the OnePlus 3 finishes in its worst time of two minutes, 22 seconds.
In a third round, the tester compares how the devices load games after system animations have been turned off. The Galaxy S7 Edge finishes in 1 minute, 30 seconds, while the OnePlus 3 finishes in two minutes, 12 seconds.
Finally, the devices are tested to see which launches the camera application faster. When launching from the home screen, the OnePlus 3 surpases the Galaxy S7 Edge for the first time. However, when launching the camera app from the lock screen shortcut, the Galaxy S7 Edge was faster.
C4ETech suggests that shortcomings for the OnePlus 3 may be due to a firmware issue, because other tests have shown the device is quite good at running multiple apps at once. In another video, the channel demonstrated that the OnePlus three runs up to eight games as background processes before games begin to reload.
Further developments from Samsung will be interesting as the manufacturer's upcoming Galaxy Note 7 (or Galaxy Note 6) is expected to host 6GB of RAM. Several manufacturers have begun implementing larger RAM capacities to support high-level processing like virtual reality.
