A lot of Pokémon have already made their debut in Pokémon GO, and the latest one is a bit different since it's the whole evolutionary line. That means prepare to meet Scatterbug, Spewpa and Vivillon.
For those who are new to the series, or may have forgotten, the Scale Pokémon Vivillon is known for its many different patterns. In the game, trainers have the chance to collect patterned Vivillon from around the world by pinning Postcards received from Trainers, PokéStops, or Gyms in different regions. By pinning Postcards from eligible regions, trainers get to unlock the Vivillon Collector medal along with adding progress to sub-medals associated with the region of origin of the Postcard. By progressing on sub-medals, trainers get the chance to encounter Scatterbug.
The Patterns
Scatterbug from various regions that evolved into Vivillon will have different patterns. These are affected by the climate of their habitat, and so far, 18 patterns have been discovered. For those who’ve managed to collect several Postcards from a certain part of the world, they may encounter a Scatterbug that evolves into a Vivillon with a pattern from one of these habitats.

Additional Info
To help make it easy for trainers to track their Vivillon pattern collection, developer Niantic revealed a new medal called the Vivillon Collector. When a trainer pins a Postcard, they’ll unlock this new medal while also seeing a short explanation of how to encounter Scatterbug.
Trainers can also collect sub-medals within the Vivillon Collector medal by pinning Postcards. They can pin both their Postcards and the ones they received from friends. These sub-medals are associated with different Vivillon pattern regions, so be sure to collect various sub-medals to encounter Scatterbug from around the world.
As a tip, the first sub-medal needs three Postcards from a region linked to Vivillon patterns. Once a sub-medal is completed, trainers can continue making progress toward that sub-medal to get extra encounters with Scatterbug. The number of Postcards needed to raise the sub-medal rank increases each rank.
