With the announcement of Pokémon Sun and Moon, it’s speculation season until the Gen 7 games finally come out during the 2016 holiday season.
Of the many things that will be discussed from now until then are how many Mega Pokémon will be included in Sun and Moon . It’s almost certain that there are going to be more Megas that will take normally obscure ‘Mon and elevate them in the Pokemon community. There are currently 48 Mega Pokémon between X and Y and ORAS but with the addition of new Pokémon in Sun and Moon, there will be new Mega Evolutions.
In no particular order, here are the 10 Pokémon that we feel are the most likely to receive a Mega Stone in Pokemon Sun and Moon:
10 Johto Starters (Meganium, Typhlosion and Feraligatr)
We lumped the three Johto starters together because it almost seems like a crime to give one and not the others (looking at you Blaziken). Also, we didn’t want to take up three spots.
Meganium, Typhlosion and Feraligatr were trainers’ first Pokémon back in Gold and Silver but the trio could use an update.
I like how GameFreak has slowly begun to roll out Megas for Starter Pokémon. In X and Y , we got the Kanto starters and the aforementioned Blaziken and in ORAS the other two Hoenn starters were given Mega Stones to commemorate the remake. But that leaves Gen 2’s starters with no love.
And since we are not getting another Gen 2 remake, giving these three a proper Mega can really breathe new life into them, especially Meganium.
We went into more depth regarding the Johto Starters when X and Y first released but it still holds up.
9 Butterfree
Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire elevated a Pokémon that no one used competitively and was often forgotten. Of course we are talking about Beedrill. Mega Beedrill became a viable physical sweeper with its insane attack and speed stats. But the addition of Mega Beedrill made us wonder about the other Kanto bug Pokemon.
Butterfree is in need of an upgrade after 20 years. A diverse move pool and access to some powerful special attacks can raise its special attack and speed and it can be the special sweeper opposite of Mega Beedrill.
8 Froslass
Froslass has a unique Ice/Ghost type and was once a viable choice for competitive battles. However, time has not been kind to the Gen 4 Pokémon especially considering its male counterpart, Glalie received a Mega Evolution in ORAS .
GameFreak rectified its mistakes of giving Gardevoir and not Gallade a Mega back when X and Y was released and they should do the same with the Snorunt line.
Boost its speed to make it the great lead it was intended to be.
7 Raichu
If you haven’t noticed, 2016 is the 20th Anniversary of the Pokémon franchise. And Pikachu is the mascot and most recognizable face of the series. So why not give its evolution, Raichu a Mega Evolution?
This would be a great chance to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the franchise by beefing up the electric mouse Pokemon and making it viable in competitive play. And no, Mega Pikachu will never happen.
6 Hydreigon
What do Metagross, Tyranitar, Salamence and Garchomp have in common? They all have Mega Evolutions but they are also classified as “pseudo-legendaries.”
Dragonite, Hydreigon and Goodra are the only remaining pseudos left (until they introduce a new one in Gen 7) and we honestly feel Goodra won’t be getting a Mega, although a Gen 6 will probably get one.
Dragonite doesn’t seem like a good candidate for a Mega in these games. It’s still a viable Pokémon and doesn’t really need the help. But with the introduction of the Fairy typing, the Dark/Dragon type, Hydreigon could sure use some help against them.
Being four times weak to fairy types is brutal, but a Mega Evolution could help boost its stats to overcome this weakness or with a new ability to bypass the resistances.
5 Weezing
Speaking of fairy types, they are only weak to steel and poison types. It is a fact that the poison typing could use some help as there are not many Pokémon of that type to begin with and only Gengar and Beedrill to hold the typing down in the Mega department.
Poison types could really use a new Mega Pokémon to balance out the fairy threat and a Mega Weezing could do just that.
Weezing is an overlooked competitive Pokémon but it has a lot going for it. Pretty good bulk, a deep move pool and the Levitate ability to neutralize its ground weakness. Boost its special attack and overall bulk and then give it a poison and fire typing to be four times resistant to the fairy threat.
Mega Weezing will be a perfect switch in to absorb any fairy type attack.
4 Whimsicott
Gen 5 had only one Mega Evolution going into Sun and Moon (Audino) and the Black and White generation needs some love.
A Mega Whimsicott will fill a lot of needs in the Mega Pokémon pool. It will give the grass type another Mega to boost its ranks and with Whimsicott being part fairy, that type will also get a new Mega.
An overall buff to its stats will benefit Whimsicott be the lead it was meant to be.
3 Lilligant
Lilligant is the sister of Whimsicott being a version exclusive from Gen 5 and this grass type could use something to differentiate and be known as a Pokémon that’s not a Bellossom clone.
Mega Lilligant could use an overall stat boost and perhaps even a second typing. If Mega Lilligant had to be anything, it should be a bulky support ‘Mon that can surprise some with its high special attack.
Lilligant really needs this upgrade because Whimsicott and many other grass types outclass it.
2 Milotic
Milotice was destined to get a Mega with Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire . It was the ace Pokémon for Wallace, the eighth gym leader in Hoenn and eventual League Champion (if you remember Pokémon Emerald) and is one of the most popular Pokémon from that region.
Not to mention Wallace had a part to play in the Delta Episode of ORAS , teasing an even larger role in another game.
Give Milotic the fairy typing and increase all of its stats and Milotic could be a top-tier Pokemon in the future.
1 Flygon
Poor Flygon. You were outmatched by Salamence in Gen 3 and against with the inclusion of Garchomp as a more viable dragon/ground type. And when the remakes for Ruby and Sapphire were announced, many believed Flygon will finally have its time in the spotlight.
But it wasn’t to be as GameFreak suffered from artists block (?) and Mega Flygon was not completed. Come on, GameFreak Flygon needs an upgrade desperately to compete with the other dragons in the game.
Two years later and Mega Flygon makes the most sense for and probably the most likely Mega in Pokémon Sun and Moon.
