Pokémon Sun and Moon has a ton of truly amazing legendary Pokémon. From Solgaleo to the Tapu line, each new protector of Alola brings something different to the Pokémon mythos. These colorful, bright and awe-inspiring monsters keep the island people safe from whatever craziness might come around. Be it a wave of Ultra Beasts from another dimension, a crazy corporation trying to control Pokémon or whatever Zygarde might be, Cosmog and his band of all-powerful pocket monsters will save the day.
Though most of these legendaries are here to help, there’s still one that remains a mystery: Necrozma. When the files for Sun and Moon were originally leaked, players thought that this foreboding black monstrosity was actually one of the Ultra Beasts. His sleek black carapace, arm spikes and angry face make him look like a part of an alternate dimension, not Alola. Now that the game is out and players have gotten their hands on Necrozma, we know that he’s just a normal legendary.
While Solgaleo, Lunala and the Tapu quadruplets all got a proper place to fight and a cutscene, Necrozma got nothing. In order to find him, you run around Ten Carat Hill and eventually he shows up. That isn’t very epic. For a Pokémon that looks as cool as any of the other legendaries, there doesn't seem to be much surrounding him.
We know even less about Necrozma from his Pokedex entries. It lives deep underground, feeds on light, is very angry and likes to shoot off laser beams. We know that Solgaleo and Lunala were ancient protectors of Alola who kept the island people from harm when times were tough. It feels like the only other “main” legendary from the series kind of got shafted, doesn’t it?
My hope is that Necrozma is going to shine (no pun intended) when the third Alola game comes out. Every single Pokémon that has a third entry has a big, bad Pokémon waiting for it’s time to shine.
Ruby and Sapphire- Rayquaza is waiting in Sky Pillar for Emerald.
Diamond and Pearl- Giratina is sitting in a cave, waiting for Platinum.
Black and White- Kyurem is chilling in a blizzard, waiting for Black/ White 2
These third-tier legendary Pokémon have never had prominent roles in the two main games. Necrozma might be lame now, but whenever the third entry in the Sun and Moon series gets released, he will be nothing but awe-inspiring. There are rumors going around that the next Pokémon game might be for the Nintendo Switch and my guess is that it will have glorious Necrozma on the cover, Pokémon stars maybe?
If you love Necrozma, don’t give up hope on him; I see an overpowered Z-move in his future.
