When it was first announced that QuakeCon 2020 would no longer hold an in-person event this year, it didn’t come as a surprise. It was just one of the many events that were cancelled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. To say that there was disappointment would be to understate it considering that it was supposed to be QuakeCon 25. You can read more on that here.
However, it was later revealed that the event would push through, albeit it would be held remotely. There’s even a YouTube channel for the event, though it seems that it’s not an official one. Still, it’s something to look forward to as this purely online event is set to begin on August 7 and end on August 9. Today we look into what to expect in this event.
For those who want to take a trip down memory lane first, you can view the video below of QuakeCon 20:
Kicking-off this QuakeCon 25 is a Global Super Stream scheduled for Friday August 7. It’s going to feature the QuakeCon Digital Welcome and highlight round-the-clock programming. Expect to see some special influencer streams along with Bethesda Community teams from around the world. The full schedule hasn’t been released yet, though hopefully it’s going to be soon.
QuakeCon is known for its bring-your-own-computer (BYOC) event and for this year, the community is going to unite and connect through the official QuakeCon at Home Twitch Team. There’s going to be play and share games, obviously, along with raising money for QuakeCon-supported charities. There’s also going to be some players set to be featured on the Twitch Team page.
It wouldn't be QuakeCon without an esports tournament and this year still has one, though it’s going to be online as well. The 2019–2020 Quake Pro League season is set to conclude at the Quake World Championship, which is on August 9. The tournament has 24 of the world’s top players fight for a prize pool of $150,000 and the rights to be named Season Champion.
QuakeCon is also about helping and for this year players are going to be able to donate to organizations directly from the official QuakeCon at Home Twitch stream. Organizations include Direct Relief, UNICEF, NAACP Legal Defense Fund, and The Trevor Project.
With the event being online, everyone’s sure to miss the doggos that visit the Exhibit Hall. For this year there’s going to be the Dogvahkiin and Catodemon up for sale with 100% of the profits going to Dallas Pets Alive and FOUR PAWS.
What about you? Are excited for this one or is it going to be a pass?
