A remake of River City: Rival Showdown is launching digitally in North America this October 12. The game is going to be available on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam, with the latter now accepting pre-orders.
The original 3DS version of the game was released back in 2016 and received wide acclaim. It is being revived not only to make it compatible for current consoles but to also give it that much-needed modernization to offer the ultimate 2D action game experience.
The updated version comes with all the updates available on the 3DS version. There's a much larger volume in the settings and storylines of the game, coupled with improved graphics and operability. Meanwhile, a new prequel story mode is available for everyone to play through after solving the mystery of the main story.
Key game features and new additions are:
- Action-Packed Story of Conspiracy and Mystery – Hot Blooded Story
- After a mysterious evening attack on Kunio, he learns that Mami, the girlfriend of his rival Riki, has been kidnapped as well.
- Following the timeline from three days before Mami's kidnapping, Kunio and Riki team up to solve the mystery and find Mami.
- They're joined by Kunio's friends from Nekketsu High School.
- Their search leads them to the source of the evil Reiho Academy, led by Yamada.
- This is where a heated battle starts.
- Free Scenario System with Multiple Endings
- Players need to search and fight across different events to learn more about the Yamada conspiracy and get to the truth.
- The story does not follow one set scenario but instead is experienced non-linearly through a concept of time passing over a four-day period. This includes events scattered across the map.
- The events played during the first three in-game days dictate what happens on the fourth day and game endings.
- Item Collection and Special Abilities
- While unraveling the story, players can visit:
- Convenience stores where they can buy recovery items.
- Public baths where HP (stamina) and SP (willpower) can be recovered.
- Thrift stores to buy equipment with special abilities.
- Special moves have evolved to be more spectacular.
- Experience gained in battle can be used to enhance the status.
