CD Projekt Red has recently revealed that the map size of Cyberpunk 2077 will be a bit smaller than Witcher 3, albeit a lot denser. Interestingly, a Redditor claims that it is 1.5 times bigger than Rockstar Games’ GTA 5.
A Reddit user known as Lord Parsifal dug deeper into information relating to a variety of games’ map sizes and compared them to the upcoming release. According to the user, the information made available online about Witcher 3’s map size is potentially wrong since the world is not as massive as what the internet claims to be.
Lord Parsifal cites a handful of reasons and starts comparing the two-lane road found in GTA 5. This road, in particular, has a distance between the two shacks in Witcher 3. He then scales the map accordingly, allowing him to reach to a ratio of 1:1.
The second metric Lord Parsifal takes into account is the in-game unit measurement. This one, in particular, tends to correspond to 0.9 meter per unit. Now, if you take all of these into consideration, the size would be about 22 sq. km. That is without a doubt one third the size of GTA 5’s map.
Of course, one has to remember that these assumptions from the aforementioned Reddit user are quite farfetched, not to mention the fact that they are too realistically calculated. What is interesting, however, is that the user sticks to the original assumption that the map size of Witcher 3 is 136 sq. km. From there, the user puts all the information obtained together and incorporates it with the map model of Cyberpunk 2077 the user created.
By combining these two elements, the Reddit user was able to come into conclusion that the map size of the Night City could be 120 sq. km. If you start comparing it to the sizes of Witcher 3’s map, then you can say that it is a tad smaller than the 136 sq. km. size. Still, it is 1.5 times the size of GTA 5’s map, which is only 80 sq. km.
Although this is purely speculation, you have to applaud the amount of work and dedication Lord Parsifal took, even more so for the facts gathered to back up the user's claims. In one way or another, all of this is quite believable, especially since CD Projekt Red claims that the game is a lot denser than Witcher 3.
