If rumors are to be believed, it looks like Activision is looking to one-up Square Enix and its Kingdom Hearts series for the crown of stupidest video game title.
According to various reports, which have been somewhat verified by people within the industry, Activision’s next Call of Duty title will be called – roll the snare drums, dim the lights and wait for it – Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. That’s it.
Of course, you shouldn’t confuse this title with the first Modern Warfare game, aptly called Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which saw release back in 2007. Don’t even try to mistake it with the much more recent remaster of the same title, called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, which was released back in 2016. For all intents and purposes, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is very much a brand-new game, set within the Modern Warfare universe, and is canonically the fourth in the series.
Holding off on why that title should be mocked, it is no surprise that the next Call of Duty title will be a Modern Warfare one. The rumors for this year’s Call of Duty started months ago, and this newest tidbit just basically confirms it. A well-known Call of Duty insider/YouTuber dropped the name in a tweet last week, with Kotaku’s Jason Schreier legitimizing it. Check out the exchange below.
Realistically speaking, even without rumors floating around, anyone involved within the industry can speculate that the next Call of Duty title is a Modern Warfare game. Black Ops has just released its fourth iteration (stylized as Black Ops IIII), the series has gone through two iterations of the same conflict (World at War and WW2), and there’s not much stock in the rest of them, namely Ghosts (near-future what-if scenario with a playable German Sheperd), Advance Warfare (futuristic setting with Kevin Spacey as antagonist) and Infinite Warfare (futuristic setting also, but this time you fight Kit Harington instead).
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, or whatever this new game ends up named, is being developed by Infinity Ward, who are expected to present the title at this year’s E3 Coliseum. According to sources close to Eurogamer, however, a formal reveal of the title will happen on May 30, this Thursday.
On a final note, the title for that Kingdom Hearts game I mentioned is Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. You can decide for yourself which one is more idiotic, I guess.
