A Rainbow Six movie is in the works from Paramount, and Ryan Reynolds is said to be in discussions for the lead role. Before you video game enthusiasts get too excited, it seems the movie will be based off of the Tom Clancy novel Rainbow Six, and not any of the video games.
This information comes from a report on Deadline. The news is related to producer and writer Akiva Goldsman signing to Paramount. Along with a Rainbow Six movie, there are also plans for a movie based on the Avengelyne comic book series and the Ologies book series, including Dragonology, Monsterology and Vampireology.
“Marc Evans and Jim Gianopulos have been longtime supporters and friends, and I am excited to be part of what they are building at Paramount,” Goldsman told Deadline.
As for the Rainbow Six movie, the plot is said to revolve around Ex-Navy SEAL John Clark, a character from the Jack Ryan novels. Clark is named the head of a new international task force, and is thrown into a series of international incidents in the hunt against terrorism. According to Deadline, sources have said Reynolds is in discussions to star as Clark with Goldsman acting as a producer.
The character John Clark appears in the films Clear and Present Danger (played by Willem Dafoe) and The Sum of All Fears (Liev Schreiber). If Rainbow Six proves to be a success, plans are in place to follow it up with origin story Without Remorse.
Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec will work on adapting the 1999 Rainbow Six novel into a screenplay. The pair are also working on a reboot of Beverly Hills Cop for Paramount, and have worked with each other writing the screenplay for Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol and the rebooted Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies.
