Samsung is still working to rectify the Galaxy Note 7 issues, and new reports from Reuters indicate the Chinese battery manufacturer ATL (Amperex Technology Limited) will supply batteries for the revamped, safer handsets.
ATL is expected to supply batteries for all Galaxy Note 7 handsets manufacturers from now. The manufacturer is also a known supplier of batteries for Apple devices.
Soon after Samsung began the Galaxy Note 7 recall in early September, reports indicated the manufacturer would no longer user batteries from its original Samsung SDI supplier. SDI was expected to supply 70 percent of Galaxy Note 7 batteries; however, the devices had a defect, which made the separator between electrodes thinner than normal. This has made Galaxy Note 7 handsets susceptible to catching fire and exploding when the device is charging and gets too hot. There have been over 70 reported cases of Galay Note 7 handsets exploding.
Replacement handsets are expected to begin shipping to many major markets Sept. 19; however, a leaked list provided by Tech blog Sammy Hub suggests new devices are already shipping in the U.S. Even so, it appears many users are not returning their handsets.
There are expected to be several measures set in place for users to identify safe Galaxy Note 7 handsets. Models in Australia are expected to feature a large blue “S” sticker next to their IMEI code on the back on the smartphone. Models in the U.S. are expected to have a white battery icon, according to Android Central , while ZDNet reports safe models may have a green battery icon.
