Rumors continue to flip flop about whether the upcoming Galaxy Note 7 will have a flat display or a curved display, or if there will be one version of each. A recent report from GSMHelpDesk claims Samsung will release a single Galaxy Note 7 model with a curved display.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 may feature a 5.8-inch dual-edge Super AMOLED display, according to the Dutch blog. Though the Galaxy Note line has traditionally featured a flat display, rumors have suggested for some time the Galaxy Note 7 may be curved. Some recent reports have proposed Samsung could launch flat and curved Galaxy Note 7 options , as it has done for several years; however, these reports are in the minority.
Samsung’s first curved display smartphone was a Galaxy Note device, the Galaxy Note Edge, which released in September 2014 alongside the Galaxy Note 4. The smartphone featured a single curved edge on its right side and an S-Pen stylus, setting it apart from Samsung’s other devices. In 2015, the manufacturer released the Galaxy S6 Edge+, which is a phablet similar to its launch companion, the Galaxy Note 5, but does not include a stylus .
According to Samsung, including a stylus would have made the Galaxy S6 Edge+ too costly. However, since then Samsung has worked on commoditizing its revolutionary dual-edge design. The manufacturer is selling its technology to other smartphone manufacturers and consumers may see curved display devices by companies including Huawei, Xiaomi and Vivo in the near future. For Samsung, the commoditization of its dual-edge display could bring down production costs (and, in turn, consumer prices) for its own curved display devices.
Though rumors about the Galaxy Note 7 display design remain uncertain, many other specs are rumored for the smartphone. GSMHelpDesk claims the device may also feature a massive 4,000mAh battery, much like the Galaxy S7 Active , which launched in early June. Other rumored features include a Qualcomm 823 or updated Exynos chip, 6GB of RAM, a 12-megapixel camera, an iris scanner, an IP68 rating, a USB Type-C port and possibly the upcoming Android N operating system.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 is expected to launch Aug. 2.
