The Galaxy Note 6 (or 7) hasn’t even been announced yet, but there are already rumors about the next Samsung flagship. Reports out of Korea suggest that Samsung’s first flagship of 2017 could have a super high resolution display.
After several years of producing devices with Quad HD (2,560 x 1,440 resolution) displays, Samsung may implement a 4K Ultra HD or 3840 x 2160 resolution Super AMOLED display on this future device, the Korea Herald reported, sighting a research note from analyst group UBI Research.
Samsung showcased a 5.5-inch 4K Ultra HD display with a 806ppi density at the Display Week conference in San Francisco in May. Analysts believe such a display would be ideal for upcoming Samsung smartphones, especially to propel the manufacturer’s push for differentiation in the smartphone market.
“Considering various factors including the production yield rate for the next-generation display expected to improve in the coming months, the 5.5-inch AMOLED will be deployed in the next Galaxy smartphone, presumably, named the S8,” a UBI Research official said in a research note.
Pundits have noted such a high-resolution feature could align with the current push for smartphones to be suitable for virtual reality applications. Google announced its VR initiative, called Daydream , at Google I/O in May and stated that Samsung is among many manufacturer planning to produce high-spec “Daydream ready” device by the end of 2016. It is likely devices released in 2017 and beyond will have similar or even more powerful features. However, Google has not indicated exactly what Daydream ready specs include. At the least, we can assume, among such specs is the Android N operating system.
Since Samsung’s current spring flagship is the Galaxy S7, it is likely the next flagship will be the Galaxy S8. However, little is known about the company’s plans for smartphones in the coming years. Other rumors suggest Samsung may announce more than one smartphone with a foldable display during Mobile World Congress in 2017. Many expect to see the Galaxy S8 feature an iris scanner and 6GB of RAM and USB Type-C.
