Samsung is working on a new smartwatch with the codename “Solis,” according to SamMobile , which could hint at a feature for the wearable. Solis translates into Sun in Spanish, which makes us wonder if the smartwatch may have a feature having to do with light.
SamMobile notes that the Samsung Gear S2 , which launched in September 2015, was codenamed Orbis, Latin for Orbit , and featured a rotating bezel. The tech blog suggests the latest codename could indicate Samsung will continue with a circular watch face design. But that just seems a little bit too simple.
Maybe the smartwatch will have an interesting back light, perhaps an onboard flashlight. The possibilities are endless. However, Samsung likely won’t reveal many details about the wearable, likely to be named the Gear S3, until at least September. The Gear S2 debuted during that time at the IFA Expo.
The upcoming smartwatch will likely run Samsung’s Tizen operating system, similar to it’s predecessor. Model numbers include SM-R760, SM-R765, SM-R770, SM-R765V and SM-R765S, according to SamMobile. The blog expects at least two will be carrier models; Verizon and Sprint maybe?
So far little is known about the upcoming Samsung smartwatch, except the manufacturer may work with Swiss watchmaker de Grisogono on a luxury model. Rumors suggest Samsung could announce iOS compatibility for the Gear S3, allowing users to control the wearable with an iPhone. Samsung announced Android compatibility for the Gear S2 in 2015, which allows the wearable to be controlled with any Android smartphone running Android 4.4 KitKat or later.
