What do you get when you put Sherlock Holmes in a Lovecraftian adventure? You get Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened, now available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. This game is actually a remake of an original title released in 2007.
It takes place in 1882 and gives us a look into how roommate Sherlock Holmes and John Watson became the world-famous crime-solving duo. The duo is asked to investigate a series of mysterious disappearances which are apparently linked to a dark cult that worships an ancient god. Whatever their plan is, it must be stopped or there would be unspeakable consequences.
What makes the case different is that for the first time in his life, Sherlock truly feels afraid. As an individual who believes in rationale and reason, he now goes against an otherworldly entity that defies all logic; a discovery that’s enlightening and shattering at the same time. In this case, the search for truth pushes Sherlock to the verge of madness and it may be the only story that John is never going to publish.
Key features of the game include:
- Investigate the Cthulhu Mythos as imagined by H.P. Lovecraft. Face the Eldritch horrors beyond human comprehension.
- Fight encroaching insanity as you pursue answers to questions that seem to have no rational explanation.
- Find clues that lead you through different locations like the famous Baker Street in London, a haunting psych ward in Switzerland, and perilous Louisiana wetlands.
- A reimagining of the 2008 title which has been rebuilt from the ground up in Unreal Engine.
- This version boasts of modern graphics and animations.
- It has an expanded storyline along with numerous side quests.
- Experience new mechanics including unique insanity gameplay.
In a post, the Frogwares Team revealed that they faced a lot of challenges while working on the game. There were irregular work schedules, constant power outages, and even war. This is because the team was based in Ukraine. The team shared that they expressed their thanks not only to families and friends but also those who supported their Kickstarter campaign.
