Zendaya, best known for her appearances in Disney Channel movies and series, has been cast as Spider-Man's love interest Mary Jane Watson in the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming.
UPDATE: In further casting announcements, ComicBook.com confirmed that Bokeem Woodbine (Fargo) will be playing Spider-Man villain The Shocker.
While Zendaya has been shooting on Spider-Man: Homecoming for a while — she appeared in footage of Spider-Man: Homecoming screened at San Diego Comic-Con 2016 — her character was unknown until revealed by The Wrap on Thursday.
While Marvel and Disney have yet to officially confirm Zendaya will play Mary Jane, The Wrap cites multiple sources within Marvel Studios.
Reactions to Zendaya’s character at Comic-Con were largely positive, though fans had no clue they were watching the next Mary Jane Watson in action.
Zendaya will star opposite Tom Holland, who first appeared as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War.
Spider-Man: Homecoming will be out in theaters on July 7, 2017.
