Splatoon 2 could be the first Nintendo Switch game to offer in-game rewards for saving up platinum points. This news was revealed in the latest rewards update from Nintendo Japan, as translated by Japanese Nintendo .
In addition to laying out dozens of limited wallpapers, currencies and other goodies spread across 3DS, Wii U, mobile devices and PC, the current listing features a brand new section for “all Nintendo Switch rewards.” While it was suggested that more would be added to the roster in the future, there are two items tied to Splatoon 2 that are listed as follows:
- Splatoon 2 FA-11 Custom Gear (Switch) ??
- Splatoon 2 Ika V Collaboration Gear (Switch) ??
Assuming the picture above offers a sneak peek at the actual rewards, we see that one of them is a lighter-hued jacket for the Inkling Girl, while the FA-11 has a much darker look when worn by Inkling Boy. The latter design looks exceptionally militaristic, and it’s going to look totally fresh on your squid during the first Turf War in July.
Since this gear amounts to the first Switch rewards we’ve seen, there are quite a few questions that need to be answered about it. How many platinum points will players have to spend if they want to try out these styles? Is this gear a limited reward, or will it only be around for launch? Given the Japanese source, it’s also not entirely clear if these rewards will be exclusive to that region or available worldwide. That being said, given Splatoon 2’s global release date and the Switch’s region-free software promise, we assume all rewards will be open to everyone.
If Splatoon isn’t your kind of game, there are a few Switch-focused bonuses worth pointing out. If you’re currently digging the tactical fighting action of ARMS, Japanese rewards include Min Min, Springman and logo wallpapers for PC and smart devices. The exclusive high-res images cost just 50 platinum points each. Zelda fans also have a little more time to snag a Breath Of The Wild 3DS theme for just 20 gold points.
My Nintendo Rewards is a special incentive program based on points that can be earned via interacting with smartphone apps like Miitomo or by purchasing select first-party games. Those points can then be redeemed to receive discounts on full games or small perks within the titles you’re currently playing. Considering Splatoon’s focus on cool gear for its characters, we imagine the program will be leveraged pretty heavily in the sequel.
Of course, it should be noted that these rewards won’t be the only way to get Splatoon 2’s best gear. Just like its predecessor, players will be able to unlock the vast majority of the wardrobe by playing in online multiplayer matches. Some of it will be offered through Amiibo figurines too.
Splatoon 2 is available worldwide on Nintendo Switch starting July 21.
