A brand-new trailer for the upcoming remake of the 2003 cult classic SpongeBob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated has just been released by publisher THQ Nordic and developer Purple Lamp Studios. The short, but sweet minute-long teaser trailer showcases the upcoming platformer’s nostalgic Goo Lagoon level, along with gameplay clips from the game’s beloved main characters, SpongeBob and Patrick, as they go through the animated series’ memorable and iconic underwater beach.
Originally released in 2003 for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, Nintendo GameCube, as well as for the PC and Gameboy Advance, SpongeBob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom is an action adventure platformer that follows the exploits of the beloved series’ main characters as they go on a quest to save Bikini Bottom from a robot invasion; the result of one of Plankton’s numerous schemes to steal the Krabby Patty formula that has gone awry. SpongeBob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom lets players play as SpongeBob Squarepants, Patrick Star, and Sandy Cheeks for specific sections and levels of the game. Each character has their own unique set of skills and moves, such as Sandy’s lasso, Patrick’s belly flops, and Spongebob’s bubble stick.
Although the original game did not become a commercial or critical hit, it soon garnered a cult following with an avid speedrunning fanbase. On June 5 of last year, THQ Nordic announced its plans to develop and publish a remake or remaster of sorts: SpongeBob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom with the added tag “Rehydrated”. This “Rehydrated” version includes the usual improvements for remakes such as improved and polished graphics, a remastered soundtrack, and more. A number of contents that weren't included in the original game will also be in the remaster, such as a number of boss fights, early concepts for specific levels, and many more.
SpongeBob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated is currently available for digital pre-order on the Microsoft Store for the Xbox One, PC via Steam, and the Nintendo eShop for the Nintendo Switch. Players can start splashing around Bikini Bottom come June 21.
