A Star Trek Beyond feature in the latest issue of Empire magazine finally blows open Krall’s mysterious motives.
“This is where the frontier pushes back,” Krall (Idris Elba under a lot of blue makeup) says in the first Star Trek Beyond trailer. But two subsequent trailers haven’t revealed much more of Krall’s plan, or why he objects so much to the United Federation of Planets. We know he’s been intentionally crashing ships and imprisoning their crews for years … and that’s about it.
Now we know the Enterprise wasn’t just an opportunistic catch for Krall, he targeted the Federation vessel with a specific objective in mind. “The Enterprise is destroyed by a locust-like swarm of alien ships, led by mysterious alien baddie, Krall (Idris Elba), who is after some glowing green artifact and rips the Enterprise apart to get it,” Empire writes.
So the plot is motivated by a glowing green rock. Boy, that’s disappointing, right?
We still don’t know exactly what Krall wants to do with this super important rock (sigh). Perhaps he has complex political and moral motives, as would be appropriate for a Star Trek movie. Or maybe it’s just a plot device for creating action scenes, like the Red Matter in 2009’s Star Trek or that endless procession of magic rocks in the Marvel movies.
When Star Trek Beyond comes out on July 22, let’s hope there’s a lot more to the plot than a glowing, green rock every side must chase.
