Star Wars Battlefront 2's multiplayer is back online, and we’re not talking about the 2017 version. That’s right, the 2005 classic is now fully functional, thanks to a partnership between Disney and GOG Galaxy.
In its blog post on the subject, GOG noted that all parts of the multiplayer suite are now live after the installation of a small patch. The best part is there’s full crossplay support between GOG and Steam versions of the game. In an effort to “bring the entire Star Wars Battlefront 2 community together,” the collaboration faithfully restores an amazing package that fell victim to the closure of GameSpy in 2014. Before now, diehard fans had to cobble together their own makeshift servers to connect with friends. Now that service has been restored, getting in on that retro action is a lot easier. That being said, the PS2 and Xbox versions are still offline.
For those who haven’t played Battlefront 2 before, now’s as good a time as any to start. Its Steam concurrents have stretched well beyond the 1,000 marker, so that means newcomers and veterans alike should have no problem finding a lobby. If that doesn’t entice you, maybe its introductory price will. Battlefront 2 is on sale for just $3.99 on GOG and is $9.99 at regular price on Steam. The GOG version is specially tuned to ensure it can run on the latest and greatest PC configurations.
This news arrives mere hours before the Star Wars Battlefront 2 2017 multiplayer beta begins across PS4, Xbox One and PC. The testing starts Oct. 4 at 4 a.m. EDT for pre-order customers and goes public by Oct. 6. In other words, those who wish to sharpen their skills beforehand have a little time to do so on the original Battlefront sequel.
Beta participants will be given access to three multiplayer maps spread across three modes. The package includes E3’s Assault On Theed, Gamescom’s Starfighter Assault Fondor demo and a new Strike mission on Takodana. Fans of bots can also check out a 10v10 setup in the new offline Arcade Mode as well.
Star Wars Battlefront 2 classic is available now on PC, PS2 and Xbox. The 2017 version comes to PS4, Xbox One and PC Nov. 17.
