Star Wars Battlefront 2 has entered closed beta for pre-order customers, but the start of the test didn’t work out as smoothly as planned. Code redemption issues across PS4, Xbox One and PC stalled downloads and installations for a large group of fans. The issue is documented on this EA support thread.
When the beta first went live at 4 a.m. EDT Wednesday morning, throngs of players scurried to their platform of choice to redeem the codes sent out by retailers. What happened next, however, left a lot to be desired. Sony’s PlayStation Network accepted PS4 codes, but they didn’t offer any sort of download. Xbox One users, on the other hand, were confronted by error messages directing them to redeem codes on another page. In the case of Origin, some users never received a code at all.
With negative reports flooding in, EA community management staff quickly responded, and the issues seem to have been mostly resolved at the time of writing. The beta should be available for download on PS4, but Xbox One and PC users may need to follow a few additional steps. Customers who placed orders on Origin on or before Oct. 2 might need to request a code by setting up a support ticket here.
On Xbox One, there’s been mixed results using this specific link to redeem codes:
https://account.xbox.com/en-US/PaymentAndBilling/RedeemCode?doRedeem=0&token=XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX&ref=AccountMicrosoftCom
The bolded X’s above stand in for the digits of the provided code.
If the link above works, you should be prompted to download a pre-release version that weighs about 15 GB.
Even though Battlefront 2’s publisher has fixed most of the issues quickly, there’s no denying the fiasco could have been avoided with the implementation of a pre-load, though one wasn’t offered this time. It’s possible DICE was working so closely up to launch that they couldn't offer this perk, but it’s a shame the rollout caused some user frustration anyway.
That being said, those who are able to get into the Battlefront 2 beta right now should be having a pretty good time. The pre-order incentive includes playable versions of Assault on Theed, Starfighter Assault on Fondor and a Strike mission on Takodana. The AI bot-based Arcade mode also offers a 10v10 match sample as well. Thankfully, the complete testing suite will be available to the public starting Friday. If you truly can’t wait that long, 2005’s Star Wars Battlefront 2 multiplayer has been fully restored with help from GoG and Disney.
Star Wars Battlefront 2 comes to PS4, Xbox One and PC Nov. 17.
