Star Wars Battlefront 2 will feature space battles in its new Starfighter Assault mode, and the EA Star Wars Twitter account has just teased some pretty big developments to come during Gamescom. More news will arrive during a stream Aug. 21 at 12:30 p.m. EDT.
The teaser doesn't tell us much, but we do see a bunch of classic ships, including Han Solo’s Millennium Falcon, Darth Maul’s Scimitar, Poe’s X-Wing a TIE Fighter and a TIE Bomber. The mode promises to feature “three eras of heroic ships” as well as “Starfighter classes and customization.”
From what we can gather, the specialized ships will likely function much like Heroes in Battlefront 2’s shooter modes. Should that be the case, they’ll be offered as limited rewards for solid performance. Beyond that, the game’s new multiplayer combat tiers appear to be expanding to ships too. That’s precisely why we see the TIE Fighter and Bomber so close to one another. We assume there will be some level of class selection.
In few words, Starfighter Assault appears to be a slightly expanded version of the Fighter Squadron mode that appeared in 2015’s game. It featured three hero ships, but not all of them were as memorable as the ones shown above, and many of the coolest crafts were DLC-exclusive as well. To mitigate this shortcoming, all of Battlefront 2’s non-cosmetic content will be free. That will hopefully help this mode be a bit more popular than its first incarnation.
The Starfighter Assault mode was briefly teased at the end of the Star Wars Battlefront 2 EA Play trailer in June. At that time, we saw a battle featuring the Falcon and some First Order destroyers. Officially, it’s described as a multi-stage, objective-based match type with two competing teams and intuitive flight controls.
Since this is the first we’ve heard of Battlefront 2’s presence at Gamescom, we’re unsure if Starfighter Assault will be the only thing on the show floor, but it appears to be the main highlight. We wouldn’t be surprised if E3’s Assault On Theed demo was playable for a second time as well. EA has also been teasing the game’s varied classes and special character systems.
Star Wars Battlefront 2 comes to PS4, Xbox One and PC Nov. 17. A beta for pre-order customers is expected to arrive this October.
