Now this looks intriguing. Netflix just announced a brand new original series that looks like a spooky blend of Stephen King, 80’s Spielberg and Twin Peaks.
Starring Winona Ryder, Matthew Modine and a clutch of 80s kids with 80s bicycles, Stranger Days looks to be about some sort of kooky alien abduction cover-up. But this ain’t no X-File. Instead, Stranger Days is clearly drawing inspiration from It, E.T., The Goonies and more.
Here’s the official Stranger Days series synopsis:
Set in Hawkins Indiana in the 1980’s, Stranger Things chronicles the search for a young boy who vanishes into thin air under highly suspicious circumstances. His mother (Winona Ryder) opens an investigation into the boy’s disappearance with local authorities that unravels a series of mysteries involving top-secret government experiments, terrifying supernatural forces and one very strange little girl. A love letter to the ubiquitous cult classics of the 80’s, Stranger Things is a coming of age story for three boys that draws this quaint community into a world where mysteries lurk beneath the surface.
Can Stranger Days manage to combine this throwback vibe with an actual compelling story? Or is it doomed to be a curious footnote like Super 8 ? We’ll know soon enough, every episode of Stranger Things will be available for Netflix streaming on July 15.
