Across the decade-long unveiling of the complete Harry Potter book series only three wizarding schools were revealed worldwide. Now Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them creator J.K. Rowling has unveiled four more.
In a post to interactive Harry Potter site Pottermore, Rowling writes “there are eleven long-established and prestigious wizarding schools worldwide, all of which are registered with the International Confederation of Wizards.”
The four new wizarding schools revealed by Rowling are Castelobruxo in Brazil, Uagadou in Uganda, Mahoutokoro in the Japanese Volcano Islands chain, and Ilvermorny, located somewhere in North America. The new wizarding school join previously known schools Beauxbatons Academy of Magic in France, the Durmstrang Institute in Northern Europe, and Scotland’s Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Rowling also introduced a map that shows wizarding school locations worldwide.

Uagaou specializes in elemental magic, including astronomy, alchemy and transforming into animals. Its students communicate through dreams and don’t require wands to perform magic.
Mahoutokoro is built on top of a volcano on the “uninhabited” island of Minami Iwo Jima. Its students wear magic, color-changing robes and were introduced to Quidditch by wayway Hogwarts students “during an attempt to circumnavigate the globe” on broomstick.
More will be revealed about Ilvermorny, the American school, in the upcoming movie adaptation of Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, which will see magizoologist Newt Scamander teaming up with Ilvermorny alumni to track down escaped magical creatures exacerbating tensions between the wizard and “No-Maj” (American for “muggle”) world.
Four more wizarding schools have yet to be revealed, though Rowling does offer a way to learn more.
