During a panel at today’s Game Developers Conference, LawBreakers lead and Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski, better known as CliffyB, revealed many new details about the upcoming shooter. We now know that LawBreakers will be exclusive to Steam at launch, will no longer be free to play and features a new art style.
LawBreakers is a five-on-five first person shooter that lets players bend the laws of gravity. This leads to an emphasis on verticality in maps, not often a common trait found in shooting games.
While previously announced as a free to play game, LawBreakers is now moving to a digital premium game model. This means paying a base price will unlock everything you need to play, but there will still be other options for things to purchase. It has been confirmed that LawBreakers will not be a $60 game, which means players can probably expect to pay less when it is finally released.
“As the game continued to take shape, we realized free to play wasn’t the right fit for what we’re building,” said Bleszinski. “ LawBreakers is a competitive game at heart and that means balance is a big priority to me, my team, and our community. Using a digital premium model helps ensure an even playing field by giving fans access to every available role without any barriers.”
LawBreakers will also feature a modified art style from what was previously released. This shift is to make LawBreakers feel more mature and to stand out from the competition. “Being constantly compared to the current slew of colorful shooters on the market made us realize we needed to stand out from the crowd” Bleszinski said in the panel.
While there may be a new art style, this is actually more in line with what the team at Boss Key originally had in mind. “We decided to take a step back and explore how we could dial up the maturity in LawBreakers, going back to our original vision,” said Bleszinski. “The new look and feel embraces the innovative and vertical nature of our game elevated by violence, intensity and competition.”
In addition to all this news, Boss Key revealed LawBreakers will initially be exclusive to PC gamers, with a release coming to Steam first. More tests are needed until Boss Key feels confident with a release, but players can add LawBreakers to their wishlist to get updated with any news. As for other consoles, nothing was confirmed, but it seems PS4 and Xbox One versions could be coming in the future.
